Bernard Joseph Stanislaus Cahill papers, [ca. 1900-1944].

The collection consists primarily of Cahill's professional, business, and personal papers, covering the years 1906 to 1942. Most of the material relates to his "Butterfly map projection," including extensive correspondence with cartographers, mathematicians, students, and publishers. Also included are records of the Cahill World Map Company and personal diaries. Diaries document Cahill's career and include sketches and references to architectural projects.

Architect and cartographer Bernard Joseph Stanislaus Cahill (1866-1944) was born in London, England, and emigrated to the United States in 1888. Eventually settling in San Francisco, his work included designs for hotels, factories, mausoleums, and an unsuccessful 1904 plan for the San Francisco Civic Center.
